These are the questions one asks themselves when reading statistics on Drug and
Alcohol abuse amongst young people.
A study in 2000 estimated 14.0 million young
Americans were illicit drug users.
This estimate represented 6.3 percent of the
population 12 years old and older.
Substance abuse has become a significant problem in
the United States , kids are abusing substances at an earlier age.
Research from a study
taken by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (N.I.D.A) in 1998 indicates that children
start abusing illegal substances as early as 12 to 13 years of age.
The N.I.D.A also
reported that teens were finding it fairly easy to procure illegal substances.
About 22
percent of teens say that they know a student at their school who sells drugs.
As a high school student I too saw the effects of substance abuse amongst my
peers.
There were days where I would go out for lunch and have friends ask me if I
wanted to go burn one; this was the term used when asking if you wanted to smoke
marijuana.
I myself would say no, but you were looked as an outsider, not cool, or just a
wannabe.
Peer pressure was always an issue.
